Nel 1934, le linee aeree americane, chiesero alla Douglas di sviluppare un aereo per il trasporto passeggeri notturno, su lunghe tratte (transcontinentale). Su questa specifica venne realizzato il Douglas "Sleeper Transport", un aereo per il trasporto diurno o notturno con 14 posti per la notte e 28 per il giorno. Questo primo modello venne realizzato in 40 esemplari, ma fu presto sostituito dalla nuova versione esclusivamente "diurna", DC-3. I 539 esemplari costruiti prima della IIa Guerra Mondiale furono ben presto affiancati dai 10.047 prodotti durante il conflitto (nelle versioni DC-3, DC-3A e DC-3B). Di questi, alcuni, anche equipaggiati con più moderni turboelica, volano tutt'ora in diversi paesi. Il DC-3 in mostra al Parco Tematico dell'Aviazione è appartenuto al noto attore americano Clark Gable dal 1956 al 1963, con i numeri di matricola N242AG, dopo essere stato acquistato dalla U.S. Navy. Durante questo periodo, dai libretti di volo in nostro possesso, risulta che su questo aereo hanno volato molte celebrità, ad esempio Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy e suo fratello Bob, Frank Sinatra e Ronald Reagan quando era ancora solo un attore, per citarne solo alcuni. L'aereo, successivamente appartenuto ad altri proprietari, è stato restaurato con i colori cari a Clark Gable. L'ultimo volo effettuato da questo bimotore risale al 1986 con i codici I-COFR.

In 1934, American Airlines asked Douglas to develop a night-flying aircraft for transcontinental passenger services. The result was the Douglas Sleeper Transport, which could carry 28 passengers on daytime flights or 14 on night flights. After 40 of these convertible aircraft had left the Douglas factory, work started on the much longer production run of the specialized DC-3 version. By the outbreak of World War II, 539 of these had been built (DC-3, DC-3A e DC-3B), followed by a further 10,047, prevalently in military versions (plus about 2500 more under license) with the names DC-3, C-47 Skytrain and Dakota, several of which are still flying today. The plane on display at the Aviation Museum belonged to American actor Clark Gable from 1956 to 1963 (N242AG), purchased from the US Navy. The flight logs in our possession show that many celebrities have flown in this aircraft, including John F. Kennedy and his brother Bob, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and Ronald Reagan when he was still a young actor. The last fly of this airplane was, in 1986, from U.S.A. to Venice (Italy).

Im Jahre 1934 fragte die American Airlines bei der Firma Douglas an, ein Nachtflugzeug für den interkontinentalen Transport zu entwickeln; entsprechend diesen spezifischen Anforderungen wurde die Douglas Sleeper Transport mit einm Fassungsvermögen von 28 Sitzplätzen oder 14 "Nacht-Liegeplätzen" gebaut. Nach der Produktion von 40 konvertierbaren Exemplaren, begann die verstärktere Konstruktion der spezialisierten Version DC-3: Vor dem 2. Weltkrieg waren davon 539 Exemplare (DC-3, DC-3A, DC-3B) und später 10.047 vorrangig militärische Versionen (plus ca. 2.500 auf Lizenz) mit den Namen DC-3. C-47 Skytrain und Dakota, von denen noch heute einige Exemplare fliegen, konstruiert worden. Das im Museum ausgestellte Flugzeug gehörte von 1956 bis 1961 dem amerikanischen Schauspieler Clark Gable, der es von der US-Marine erworben hatte. Aus den Flugbüchern, die in unserem Besitz sind, geht hervor, dass in diesem Flugzeug J.F. Kennedy und sein Bruder Bob, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra und Ronald Reagan, der damals noch ein junger Schauspieler war, geflogen sind. Das Flugzeug wurde in den Originalfarben und dem Code aus jener Zeit restauriert.
